Patent

Although copyright does work to protect your original item, for extra security it is always a good idea to get an invention or item patented. In order to do this it needs to be something that is completely original and not just a modified item that someone else has done. Although unlike copyright there are only certain items that can be patented. This is the main difference between copyright and patents. Whilst copyright can protect a form of creative expression a patent would protect a physical item such as an invention or product. Below is a link to show exactly what items can and can not be patented.

A patent can be considered a designer or inventor’s ownership of an item and only lasts for a temporary amount of time which is normally 20 years. There is a link below for the best article I managed to find for explaining how patents work.
